The Memphis Grizzlies could be targeting Josh Giddey and making a trade unrelated to the 2021 NBA Draft

This is where things get tricky in regards to the Memphis Grizzlies’ plans for the 2021 NBA Draft. As mentioned, Memphis has made it known that they want to trade up again in the NBA Draft, which makes putting Tyus Jones on the track block puzzling.

The implication here is that the Grizzlies will be looking for a backup point guard. The strange part here is that the best two point guards in the draft not named Cade Cunningham are seemingly within reach already. Even more specifically, Josh Giddey, a well-known Grizzlies target, is ranked as the draft’s 11th best player.

That said, Giddey has been gaining traction as a player who could end up going to the Warriors, a team that the Grizzlies will undoubtedly attempt to trade up with. That said, if Memphis is receiving intel that Giddey, an 18-year old who averaged 11 points, 7 assists, and 7 rebounds, is going to drop to the 10th spot, I think they should roll the dice.

Giddey’s ceiling makes him the player that Justise Winslow was supposed to be. A large-bodied forward who can facilitate the game. The Grizz could substitute Morant out of the game without sacrificing the playmaking ability of their franchise point guard.

With the trade assets that Memphis has, they could potentially find a higher quality, proven player in the NBA to add to the roster and still get the player they want in the draft.

But I don’t think this is what the Grizzlies are trying to do.
