You’ve heard it before and you’ll continue to hear it — the Memphis Grizzlies are playing the long game this offseason. This is why, in many fans’ eyes, the team as a whole may actually regress from a season ago.

Even so, the Grizzlies will improve in certain areas solely due to the fact that they have young, progressing talent. So while the losses of players like Jonas Valanciunas and Grayson Allen hurt, things may not be as bad as they seem.

Today, I’m going to be breaking down every position and determining whether it improved or declined. I’ll be judging the position as a whole, analyzing the starter and every reserve player behind that starter. It’s important to remember that this roster is still subject to significant change.

Memphis Grizzlies Point Guard Position

Rostered Point Guards: Ja Morant, Tyus Jones, Rajon Rondo

This position group feels like one that could look way different behind Ja Morant by the time the 2021 season begins. Everybody knows that Tyus Jones is sitting on the trade block, while Rajon Rondo’s value is unknown at age 35.

A trade at this position seems inevitable but for now, we’re going to look at the roster as it stands. Overall, this position group has improved. It went from Morant and Jones to Morant, Jones, and Rondo. It’s simple.

In fact, I’d make the argument that even if Jones is gone, the point guard spot has taken a significant step forward for the Grizzlies. Ja Morant is destined to take a step forward in his third season and with a two-time NBA Champion and four-time NBA All-Star behind him, he should improve even more.

Verdict: Improved
