Memphis Grizzlies Trade Candidate No. 3: San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs had one of the quieter falls from grace in recent memory. Greg Popovich’s team is in an interesting spot, with a handful of solid talent and no true superstar. The Spurs are essentially in rebuild mode — they’re looking for a way to build their way back up without a complete overhaul.

A trade with the Memphis Grizzlies may be just what they need.

The Grizzlies have a few pieces that San Antonio may be interested in. Specifically, Tyus Jones should be an interesting target for Popovich’s team. Jones would be joining his brother Tre Jones in San Antonio and could immediately compete for a starting spot on the team. Yes, Dejuante Murray would likely win it, but Jones would play to his proper value there.

Nobody has even mistaken Tyus for a superstar point guard. Yes, his league-leading assist-to-turnover ratio was impressive, but that’s all that he is — a safe backup who can hold onto a lead when the starter is out of the game.

With Ja Morant set to steadily increase in minutes, Jones would never have found a great spot in this roster. The Spurs, on the other hand, have the money to pay Jones after the upcoming season and the situation that would allow for him to succeed. These two teams could come to a player-friendly deal and there wouldn’t be a better place for the Grizzlies’ current backup PG to develop.

Even if it wasn’t Jones, the Grizzlies have too many young players to experiment on. There is no shortage of options on this Memphis Roster to unload onto another young team.
