The Memphis Grizzlies should retire the jersey of former NBA Defensive Player of the Year Marc Gasol

Marc Gasol, the brother of Pau Gasol, stands on his own as an important pillar for the Grizzlies franchise. Marc was the 2012-13 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the highest individual award winner in franchise history.

“Big Spain,” as he was frequently called during his early years with the Memphis Grizzlies, is a former NBA Champion with the Toronto Raptors, helping them win the first NBA Championship in franchise history during the 2018-19 season.

Marc Gasol helped his brother Pau and the Spanish National Team to a silver medal in both the 2008 Olympics and 2012 Olympics.

Gasol is the franchise leader in numerous categories for the Grizz. He holds the top spot for: minutes played, field goals made, free throws, defensive rebounds, total rebounds, blocks, and triple-doubles, according to Basketball-Reference.

Like Zach Randolph and Tony Allen, Gasol was a key cog in helping Memphis reach the Western Conference Finals in franchise history during the 2013-13 NBA season.

Gasol is still an active player in the NBA, currently on the roster of the Los Angeles Lakers. Once he retires from the NBA, it will only be a matter of time before the Memphis Grizzlies retire his number 33.
