It’s no secret the Memphis Grizzlies are making minor moves this offseason to make bigger, better moves in the future. The team has already made six trades this offseason, mostly for players who fit at least one of the following criteria:

  1. They are on a cheap/inexpensive contract
  2. They are young and have still have potential to be rotation-level NBA players
  3. They won’t be on the team in 2022

A lot of people are asking why? Why are the Grizzlies seemingly taking a step back when they should be taking steps to get better immediately? Well, the short answer is the team is doing its best to position itself so they can sign a big-name free agent (the less likely option) or trade for such a player (the more likely option). They’re also in no rush to try and compete in an era where LeBron James remains a dominant force and has so much clout on player movement.

The Memphis Grizzlies will not have another splashy offseason in 2022

Don’t expect such a trade for the Memphis Grizzlies to happen any time soon. In fact, I wouldn’t count on the Grizzlies to make any big splashy offseason moves next offseason (2022), either.

Like any fan of the Memphis Grizzlies, I hope for the best possible outcome for the team, but count this writer as someone who is bearish on the team making any major moves next offseason. Next offseason could very well be a carbon copy of this offseason that saw several minor trades, but no franchise-changing acquisitions (mainly due to the lack of desirable, available players).

I’ve outlined three possible paths the team could take to make a big move, but they all currently look bleak.
