This trade was seemingly designed to benefit the Hawks, creating a superteam in Atlanta

There’s no way around it — it’s clear that this trade was designed to create a superteam, or at least the potential of a superteam, in Atlanta.

The Hawks give up De’Andre Hunter, the aforementioned forward who has looked good in his first couple of NBA seasons. They’re also giving up a pair of future first-round picks, Cam Reddish, and Kevin Huerter. That’s a lot.

In return, they’re bringing in two players who are coming off of breakout seasons in Dillon Brooks and OG Anunoby. Specifically, this gets them out of a stick contract situation with a few of the team’s forwards approaching contract renewals. Here’s what Hughes said about that.

"The Hawks can’t keep all their young wings, especially as they begin to line up for more expensive second contracts. So they’re packaging them in this deal to land, in my opinion, a transformative potential superstar in OG Anunoby plus even more defensive punch in Dillon Brooks."

This one would give the Atlanta Hawks a lineup with Trae Young, Dillon Brooks, OG Anunoby, John Collins, and Clint Capela. They would instantly become one of the league’s title favorites, though chemistry would likely take a while to develop.

Again, there’s a simple truth here — Atlanta would be winning this deal.
