Memphis Grizzlies Training Camp Storyline No. 2: We’ll get some clarity on the backup point guard position

The backup point guard position for the Memphis Grizzlies has been one of the more under-the-radar storylines this offseason. Near the beginning of the offseason, the Grizzlies listed backup point guard Tyus Jones on the trade block.

This made sense, as the former Duke guard was entering a contract season and coming off of his best year thus far in the NBA. The Grizzlies had a choice — give Jones a larger contract than a backup point guard needs or find a team to trade him to. They elected to do the latter.

A few months later and the Grizzlies still haven’t traded Jones.

Instead, they brought in a handful of other point guards, including Rajon Rondo, Patrick Beverley, and Kris Dunn. Dunn is the only one that survived on the roster up to the point of training camp.

Dunn is older (28 years old) and coming off of a rough two-year stretch that saw his least productive NBA season and more recently, and an injury-riddled season. No matter what Dunn does in the upcoming season, he will come at a cheaper price than Jones.

Training camp will give everybody a first look at whether or not Dunn can be a good fit for this team. The Grizzlies will be eager to find a cheaper backup who can run the offense and Dunn could be the guy for years to come.
