Grizzlies: 3 biggest storylines to keep an eye on during 2021 Training Camps
Memphis Grizzlies Training Camp Storyline No. 3: The pecking order at the wing position should become clearer
Another big question mark heading into the season is what Memphis plans to do about an overcrowded wing position. Last year, the Grizzlies had more depth than they knew what to do with — they handled it by trading away Grayson Allen for a pair of second-round picks.
Unfortunately, things became even more confusing when the Grizzlies drafted Ziaire Williams and picked up Ziaire Williams as an undrafted free agent. Then, they traded for Jarrett Culver. This gave them three more wing players with not much space to fill.
In total, the Grizzlies now have all of the following players at the wing spot.
- Desmond Bane, Dillon Brooks, Kyle Anderson (sort of), Ziaire Williams, Jarrett Culver, De’Anthony Melton, John Konchar, Sam Merrill, Yves Pons
That’s a total of nine players, with four of the guys being shooting guards and five being closer to the small forward position.
It’s hard to say that we’ll have too many distinct answers in this regard after training camp, but we may learn more in terms of where Taylor Jenkins plans to play guys like Culver, Williams, and Pons. Heck, even Desmond Bane looked like he was transitioning more towards a point guard position during Summer League Play.
It’s hard to pinpoint just what we’ll be able to learn, but this is a position group to watch over the next few weeks.
