What we’ve learned about the Grizzlies’ rookies so far in preseason play
What about the Memphis Grizzlies’ other three rookies?
Romeo Weems
I gave Romeo Weems smaller font because he’s only been around for a single game. You have to earn the big text.
Weems signed with the Grizzlies on October 8th and in his single game with the Grizzlies, he put up two points, three rebounds, and a steal. Considering he was only in the game for fewer than eight minutes, he stuffed the stat sheet. We’ll have to wait and see how he does in the next few contests.
Santi Aldama
Santi Aldama was another worrisome pickup for the Memphis Grizzlies. Zach Kleiman and his front office traded up for him and in Summer League play, he was underwhelming. It wasn’t necessarily unexpected, however, as Aldama came from a small school in Loyola (Maryland).
That said, the stretch big played lights-out in the Grizzlies’ most recent preseason game, scoring 16 points in the game. The best part? He did it without using his three-point shooting as a crutch throughout the game, knocking down just one long-range shot.
Aldama also had nine rebounds and didn’t look outmatched as he had during summer league.
Yves Pons
Yves Pons was the Grizzlies’ first undrafted free agent signing this offseason. Pons was an intriguing pickup as a former SEC Defensive Player of the Year who didn’t earn much respect in terms of the NBA Draft.
That said, he’s been a pretty pleasant surprise thus far as a rookie. He has only appeared in two games, and in these two preseason games, his stats have been pretty unimpressive. His weaknesses are on the offensive end and he’s done virtually nothing to help the Grizzlies’ attack, scoring just one point per game.
That said, he has looked really strong on defense, accumulating two blocks in two games. His athleticism has been on full display, with a high-rising block against the Hawks and, as odd as it sounds, the most impressive display of getting dunked on that I’ve ever seen.
