Player No. 3: The Memphis Grizzlies have a competition going on for the backup point guard spot between Kris Dunn and Tyus Jones

I’ll admit it — I didn’t know who to list between Kris Dunn and Tyus Jones this time around.

The obvious choice to be traded here would be Dunn. That said, the Grizzlies should have all of the motivation in the world to move Jones before his contract expires. As things stand, it’s hard to say that the backup point guard spot is a huge priority with paydays coming up for Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr.

They won’t be eager to pay Tyus Jones, even if he can make an argument for best backup point guard in the league. Still, Dunn could be traded too. The Grizzlies would likely be able to extend him for cheap if he is a good fit on this team — and that’s a big if.

For this reason, I don’t see a trade happening that involves either of these guys anytime soon. There’s also the factor that Dunn has been out for nearly the entire preseason due to a “dental procedure,” which would indicate that he has a fair amount of job security at the present moment. Emergencies aside, it would be an odd move to see a guy fighting for his job schedule a dental procedure during his only time to prove himself.

As I said, this is a storyline that we’ll have to wait out.
