The Memphis Grizzlies can avoid a Ben Simmons situation by keeping our superstars happy, healthy and wealthy

Let’s first examine Jaren Jackson, Jr., who seems the more likely candidate at this point in time to pull a maneuver like Simmons and seek an exit from the team.

Jackson and his team have reportedly been in contact with Memphis about a long-term contract extension. No one really knows how those conversations have been going, but signs point to a deal being struck after the conclusion of the 2021-22 season.

The Grizzlies have done everything they can to keep Jackson healthy. They prioritized his health when he needed surgery and eased him back into the lineup, despite the obvious benefit he would bring to the team to increase the team’s chances of making the 2021 NBA Playoffs outright.

They are keeping him happy by drafting his former college teammate and featuring him in heavy promotions for the new season.

Hopefully, the team can deliver the wealthy part of the equation. Contract negotiations are a fickle thing– if the player doesn’t like the vision or direction the team is headed in, talks could break down and Jackson could seek an exit. Just look at what’s happening in Phoenix right now with DeAndre Ayton. Not pretty.
