Grizzlies G Desmond Bane looks like the more obvious option to stick in the starting lineup when Brooks returns

To me, however, it seems more likely that “Mr. Do Something,” or Melton, will be the one coming off of the bench.

For starters, pun intended, Bane looks like he belongs in the starting role. Melton has been a force defensively, but his game has been wildly inconsistent. He’s more suited to come off of the bench as an “energy” guy.

On a significantly higher volume of shots, Bane’s efficiency hasn’t dropped at all. In fact, he’s knocking down a higher overall percentage of his attempts, scoring on 48% of his shots. From three-point range, he’s still well above 40% with 41.1% on the year.

In 2021-22 so far, Bane is averaging 17.2 points per game, cementing himself as this team’s second scoring option. And in all honesty, the eye test tells you that he’s the second-best player overall on this team.

Because of this, I project Bane to keep his spot in the starting lineup over a more experienced player in De’Anthony Melton. It’s clear that alongside Bane, the rest of the offense opens up, as he has been a huge force on this team in the past couple of weeks.

We’ll find out what Taylor Jenkins thinks upon Dillon Brooks’ return. But one thing is abundantly clear — Bane is the perfect fit on this team. Here’s why.
