Grizzlies G Desmond Bane could be the “Robin” if Ja Morant is “Batman”

It is a bit ironic that I’m talking about a guy named Desmond BANE in this conversation. If you’re not familiar with the comics, Bane is actually the supervillain in the Batman series. In this scenario, Desmond Bane might be a superhero’s sidekick.

In every way, Ja Morant is Batman for the Memphis Grizzlies. He can glide through the air, much like Batman, and is the undeniable protector of this Grizz basketball team. Bane, on the other hand, is quickly becoming the perfect complementary player to Ja Morant.

Here’s how.

For the entirety of Ja Morant’s rookie year and a large portion of his sophomore season, the Grizzlies didn’t have many players shooting the ball well around him. Memphis finished with below-average long-range shooting percentages in each of the last two years and the cast around Morant were all average from deep.

This consisted of guys like Kyle Anderson, Dillon Brooks, and De’Anthony Melton, who didn’t break out as a shooter until last year.

WIth Bane now seemingly in the starting lineup permanently, Ja Morant’s true potential can be explored. Bane’s three-point shooting is a serious threat — he’s more consistent than anyone in the league and has opposing defenders flying through the air after a pump fake at least two or three times per game.

With each team’s two-guard stuck defending Bane on the perimeter, Morant will have a lot more space to work in the paint. Bane is the perfect complementary guard for Morant, which is likely what convinced Memphis to pick him up in the 2020 NBA Draft.
