Memphis Grizzlies survive second-half surge from Spurs for sixth consecutive win
Memphis Grizzlies escape San Antonio with a win against a dramatically improved Spurs team
Backup point guard Tyus Jones carried the Memphis Grizzlies to a 112-111 win with a near career-best night against a resurgent San Antonio Spurs team on the road March 30.
The Spurs, who are competing with the Los Angeles Lakers for the final spot in the NBA Play-In Tournament, got an incredible performance from Dejounte Murray, who posted 33 points (12-20, 6-9 3PT) and grabbed 13 boards.
Murray helped the Spurs outscore the Grizzlies in the second half 59-47, but it wasn’t enough. Jones prevailed with a signature performance that showcased why he’s the best backup point guard in the NBA.
Jones, the NBA’s assist-to-turnover ratio king, posted 25 points (5-10 from 3PT), 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 0 turnovers in 36 minutes of action, despite appearing to injury a finger or couple of fingers during the game. He had to get a couple of them taped together, but it didn’t stop him from having an all-around great game.
The Grizzlies got great production from Dillon Brooks, who stuffed the stat sheet with 21 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists despite playing with 5 fouls late in the game.
De’Anthony Melton continued his hot streak, netting 4 made threes and totaling 16 points off the bench.
The Grizzlies improve to 54-23 on the season, moving ever so close to tying the franchise record for most wins in the regular season (56).
Next up for the Memphis Grizzlies is a matchup with the only team in the NBA with a better record than the Grizzlies— the Phoenix Suns (61-14). That game is set for April 1 and will air at 7 p.m. CT on NBA TV.
