5 reasons why the Memphis Grizzlies can win an NBA Championship this season
No 2. The Grizzlies have contenders for COTY, MIP and DPOY
Memphis has quietly stacked the deck with several candidates for league-wide awards. The first among those is Head Coach Taylor Jenkins, who should be given heavy consideration for being able to do more than just about any NBA coach with less talent.
Morant has missed 22 games. The entire starting five has played a total of 96 minutes this season. The team has only had Dillon Brooks for 30 games total.
You could make the case for Ja Morant, Desmond Bane or even De’Anthony Melton to be considered for the NBA’s Most Improved Player this season. Desmond Bane and Ja Morant are the two most likely of the trio to be in contention.
Finally, Jaren Jackson Jr. has become a top-tier defender in the NBA this season. Coined as the Block Panther by Brevin Knight, Jackson is the leader in blocks per game and total blocks this season. He’s finally figured out how to take better gambles on defense without fouling.
No 1. Memphis fears no team because they’ve beaten nearly all of them
Memphis has defeated every team in the NBA at least once, except for the Atlanta Hawks and the Boston Celtics.
Ja Morant got injured in both games against the Hawks. And the Celtics just flat-out kicked the butts of the Grizzlies in Boston. They’ll have one more chance to rectify that in the regular season finale.
Against the top-tier teams, the Grizzlies have the blueprint and the pedigree to continue winning. Here’s the regular season records against some of the top teams this season:
- LA Clippers: 4-0
- San Antonio Spurs: 4-0
- Denver Nuggets: 3-0
- Golden State Warriors: 3-1
- Utah Jazz: 2-0
- Phoenix Suns: 2-1
- New Orleans Pelicans: 2-1
- Minnesota Timberwolves: 2-2
- Dallas: 1-3
The Grizzlies will play the Jazz, Nuggets, and Pelicans in the final days of the regular season. So, these win/loss totals will change slightly.
The only teams Memphis struggled within the Western Conference this season were the Minnesota Timberwolves and Dallas Mavericks.
Come playoff time, the Grizzlies are going to be locked-in and a darkhorse pick to win an NBA Championship.
