Patrick Beverley, once fined for “verbal abuse” of referee in playoffs, chastises Taylor Jenkins for criticizing refs after Game 4
Minnesota Timberwolves guard Patrick Beverley chastised Memphis Grizzlies Head Coach Taylor Jenkins for his post-game comments in which he criticized the Game 4 referees in the team’s 118-119 loss on April 23.
It’s funny to hear the scrappy and tenacious journeyman guard take umbrage with Jenkins and his decision to disparage the referees.
Jenkins, acknowledging to members of the media that he would be fined for his remarks, felt inclined to air his grievances anyway after Game 4.
“I’ve never seen a more inconsistent, arrogant, officiated game,” Jenkins said during post-game. “So, I’ll take whatever hit is coming my way. I’ve got to protect our guys.”
Jenkins was as professional and level-headed in his remarks, unlike a certain player that wears No. 22 for Minnesota.
Patrick Beverley questions Memphis Grizzlies Coach Taylor Jenkins ref criticism
In comments captured by Minnesota Timberwolves writer and podcaster Dane Moore, Patrick Beverley wondered out-loud how Grizzlies Coach Taylor Jenkins could ever do such a thing as disparage a referee.
"“I seen the interview with Coach Jenkins about the referees. Very interesting there. Especially due to the fact that I think they shot 42 free throws the first time we played them, and I don’t think coach Finch complained at all. Took it, we won, he took it on the chin, you know. Two fouls on Ja Morant both games 1 and game 3, I take charges for his third foul, I don’t get the call. But we’re not up here complaining about referees. I think the referees are in a tough position as it is already. And coming from a young coach, that’s just something that you don’t do. Me being in this league for a decade, that’s something you just don’t do, especially during playoff time. So kinda confused about that.”"
Back in September of 2020, while playing for the Los Angeles Clippers, Beverley was fined $25,000 for “verbal abuse toward referee” during a playoff game against the Denver Nuggets.
Beverley was upset that he was being called for fouling Nuggets guard Jamal Murray and must have sad some offensive things to the referee.
It’s not clear what exactly he was saying, but Beverley had to be pulled off the court by teammates and coaching staff to avoid further damage in the heat of the moment.
It’s not a good look for the current Timberwolves guard to talk about an opposing team’s coach like that in the playoffs.
So, Game 5 just got even more interesting thanks to Patrick Beverley. The game is slated to begin at 6:30 PM CT on TNT.
