How far can Taylor Jenkins guide the Memphis Grizzlies in the playoffs?
Memphis Grizzlies get zero relief for winning brutal Round 1 series
The next series for the Grizzlies is against the Golden State Warriors, coached by Steve Kerr.
The Warriors have jumped up to be the odds-on favorite to win the title this year in most sportsbooks.
Even though the Warriors are the favorites, the Grizzlies will face better matchups and a play style that suits them better than anything the Timberwolves showed them. With the better matchups and play style, more eyes are going to fall on Taylor Jenkins to find matchups and schemes to give the Grizzlies an edge.
The Grizzlies will be underdogs and have already overachieved, so they are playing with house money, but this is a great opportunity for Taylor Jenkins to make a name for himself and to no longer be disrespected by the national media.
Most, if not all members of the media, will give the coaching edge in this series to Steve Kerr and why wouldn’t they? He is an eight-time NBA Champion winning five as a player and three as a coach.
Even so, this is a prime opportunity for Jenkins because the advantage Kerr has is really his experience, but maybe not as much as others may think. Kerr has coached multiple All-Stars on every team he has had, except for two (since beginning his coaching career in 2014). In the two seasons he lacked multiple All-Stars, the Warriors missed the playoffs both times. Jenkins has coached teams with less talent and done more with it.
Everyone can argue his coaching ability all they want, but the fact of the matter is that Taylor Jenkins has done extraordinarily well and way-outperformed expectations in his first three seasons as the head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies.
He has earned his spot as the Memphis coach, if for no other reason than he has created and maintained a culture that should not be taken for granted.
Memphis is so lucky to have him. Look around the league at all the coaching turnover and locker room turmoil and tonight, before bed, add the Memphis Grizzlies and Taylor Jenkins to your blessings list.
