One of the biggest questions of the 2022 offseason for the Memphis Grizzlies is whether or not the team will hold on to Dillon Brooks or be open to trading him as he enters the final year of his contract.

Brooks, who averaged 18.4 PPG, 3.2 RPG, and 2.8 APG last season, has $11.4 million left in the final year of his contract before he becomes an unrestricted free agent after the 2022-23 season.

While Brooks, 26, had a shaky postseason, he holds a lot of value for a team as a young, primary defender and can be a decent second or third-option scorer for a lot of teams.

Why would the Grizzlies trade Brooks? Well, Memphis has sort of outgrown a need for Brooks. He requires a lot of shots on offense and on the Grizzlies, he really should not be taking more shot attempts than Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, or Jaren Jackson.

His defense is really good, but no longer the best on the team. That title belongs to Jaren Jackson Jr., who has emerged as one of the best defenders in the NBA— evident by being named NBA All-Defensive First Team this year.

Brooks has suddenly become expendable, so what kind of return could the Grizzlies get for him? What should they be aiming for?

Let’s unpack some options.
