Memphis Grizzlies: Sorry, Kevin Durant is not walking through that door
Memphis Grizzlies Twitter has been in full-on offseason mode, replete with unsubstantiated rumors of superstar players wanting to play in the 901.
One of the most bombastic rumors we’ve seen came across the Memorial Day weekend in which a Twitter user tweeted something suggesting Kevin Durant wants to team up with Ja Morant in Memphis.
The problem is this was an unsubstantiated rumor from someone that’s not a reporter, insider, or anyone with credibility for getting sports scoops.
Kevin Durant trade to the Memphis Grizzlies made the rounds on Twitter
But, let’s unpack this, shall we?
This person claims to have “heard something” from a former NBA player, who said they heard rumors from other people that supposedly know Kevin Durant’s innermost thoughts and desires.
So what we have here is the classic heard it from a friend, who heard it from another friend, who has provided us something just vague enough that it can’t be proved or disproved.
Let’s say Durant really does feel this way. Let’s say he wants to team up with Morant in Memphis. The cost of executing that trade will be so astronomical, the Grizzlies would have to part with just about every asset that makes this team so exciting and dynamic.
You’d have Ja Morant, Kevin Durant, and some role players. Isn’t that what Durant has now in Brooklyn?
We haven’t even mentioned the fact that his current team, the Brooklyn Nets, have done nothing to suggest they want to part with one of the greatest basketball players on the planet.
His team has made some allusions to the fact that they don’t want to bring Kyrie Irving back on a long-term deal. Some have suggested that this has made Durant unhappy. Those rumors are a little more credible than the one we’ve heard about KD wanting to team up with Ja Morant.
I think Brooklyn has every intention of wanting to keep Durant in Brooklyn and keep him happy.
It would be amazing to have Morant and Durant in Memphis, but the cost to get the former MVP and NBA Champion in the 901 would be too great of a cost to pay.
Plus, given that Durant is about a decade older than the Grizzlies core, this is not a scenario worth pursuing.
