Memphis Grizzlies could offer draft capital in blockbuster trade scenarios

One of the richest forms of currency in today’s NBA is draft picks and fortunately for us, the Grizzlies have a substantial amount in the near term.

Over the course of the next three drafts, Memphis has nine picks, including four in the 2024 draft. It’s nearly impossible to predict, but some of these picks could be early second-round picks depending on how they finish in those respective seasons.

2023

Round 1
Round 2
Round 2 via Minnesota

2024

Round 1
Round 1 via Golden State
Round 2 via Toronto
Round 2 via Indiana, Utah, or Cleveland

2025

Round 1
Round 2 via New Orleans

2026 and beyond

The Grizzlies currently own all of their first and second-round picks

The team is already incredibly young and could stand to get a little older at some point. So, trading some of these picks should become desirable at some point as the core players are in their mid-to-late 20s.

In a hypothetical blockbuster for Kevin Durant or Donovan Mitchell, a team could ask the Grizzlies to chip in a few picks in exchange for a player that’s under team control for a few years and fills a significant need or provides a significant upgrade.

The Warriors’ first-round pick owed to Memphis in 2024 will come at a time in which Stephen Curry will have just completed his age 37 season, which could prove to be a valuable pick if Father Time catches up with one of the all-time great shooters.
