Kennedy Chandler likely to see some playing time in the G-League

With Tyus Jones back in the fold with the Grizzlies for a couple of more seasons, it’s bought the team some time to develop Kennedy Chandler.

If Morant ever endures an injury this season, Tyus Jones would likely be elevated to the starter (as has been the case in previous seasons) and Chandler could serve as his backup in those games.

In the meantime, however, Chandler may be best served to get some reps in Southaven with the team’s G-League affiliate.

“If I do get sent down to play for the Hustle, I can take that as an advantage and get reps in, honestly,” the Memphis native said during his media session.

“I’m excited. There’s nothing wrong with [playing in the G-League], just getting a lot of reps in. Santi’s told me about how that went with him and look at him now—he’s had a great summer league and he’s just about getting better,” Chandler said.

With the way this team has been able to develop players and get them ready to compete on the main roster, Chandler knows playing in Southaven is not a punishment, but a tool to work on his game and keep him ready to help if he’s needed to step in as a rookie as a rotation player.

Why Tyus Jones decided to re-sign with the Memphis Grizzlies

We weren’t sure what would happen with Tyus Jones this offseason, but the young veteran decided to re-sign with the Grizzlies after mulling his options as an unrestricted free agent. He divulged how he arrived at the decision to stick around with the Memphis Grizzlies.

“For me coming back here, it was about comfort,” Tyus Jones revealed during Media Day.

“With the coach, staff, my teammates, the system, and with the city—my family is here,” Jones said. He’s also looking forward to continuing his quest to chase a championship with the Grizzlies and with this squad, “we got all the pieces we need,” he said.

Jones also cited not having to learn a new system and being able to back up arguably the best point guard in the league were attractive reasons for re-upping for two more years with the Grizzlies.

The Minnesota native also talked about the opportunity to link up with rookie David Roddy, whom he knows a bit from Roddy’s time on the same AAU team as his younger brother, Tre Jones of the San Antonio Spurs.
