Memphis Grizzlies: 3 Takeaways from thrilling preseason win vs Bucks
By Reed Chapman
David Roddy showed he can contribute right away for Memphis Grizzlies
The biggest thing that I took from the Grizzlies’ first preseason game is how David Roddy showed that he was ready to contribute on an NBA floor right away.
He was tied with Kenneth Lofton Jr. as the leading scorer for the team, finishing with 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals.
The thing that jumped out at me early on was Roddy’s incredible off-ball defense. When taking a look at the film, you can see that Roddy was often times a step early if a player was driven by, and his nose for the ball became obvious from the jump.
He also showed his unique ability to create his own shot as well as his fantastic ability to run the floor at his size.
Early in the game, David Roddy appeared confident with the ball in his hands, and had a few flashes of creating his own shot in creative and effective ways. Some of those shots didn’t fall, but he finished the night shooting 5-12 from the field and 2-4 from the three-point line.
There were a few times tonight when the Grizzlies desperately needed a bucket to get back into the game late, and Roddy simply busted his tail down the court, beat everybody, and was given the ball for an easy transition layup.
His play style undoubtedly fits what the Grizzlies like to do on the court to perfection, and don’t be surprised if David Roddy continues to ball out this preseason and earns himself a spot in the rotation on opening night, especially with Jaren Jackson Jr. expected to miss some time.
