After shattering expectations in 2022, it was a relatively quiet offseason for the Memphis Grizzlies. Some of their key moves included trading De’Anthony Melton to the Philadelphia 76ers for Danny Green and recently signing center Steven Adams to a two-year extension.
While the Grizzlies have stayed put, for the most part, they could play a role in a possible blockbuster deal. During his most recent reporting on the Russell Westbrook trade saga, The Athletic’s Shams Charania cited Memphis as a possible third team to facilitate a trade between the LA Lakers and Indiana Pacers.
"The Lakers and Pacers also discussed adding a third team, such as the Grizzlies, who could take a 2027 or 2029 first-rounder from the Lakers for two first-rounders of their own to send to Indiana, according to sources. For the Pacers, every conversation with the Lakers led to an ultimate demand: Both of L.A.’s available first-round picks – or no deal."
Should the Memphis Grizzlies help the Lakers get a Westbrook deal done?
There is no denying that unprotected picks are a valuable asset to have, but the question must be asked if a move like this makes sense for the Grizzlies. Getting in these talks as a third team could ultimately end up doing more harm than good.
Even though they are a young team, the Grizzlies are on the cusp of getting ready to contend. More importantly, they want to maintain their top spot in the Western Conference after finishing second last season. If they aid the Lakers in moving off of Westbrook, they’d only be doing the competition a favor.
Despite Westbrook’s awkward fit, the Lakers are still a team to keep an eye on. LeBron James continues to play at a high level, and if Anthony Davis can stay on the court, they’ll be a competitive group. Allowing them to add complementary pieces like Myles Turner and Buddy Hield would get them one step closer to being back in the title picture.
The Grizzlies should always keep their eyes peeled for possible ways to make upgrades, but a move of this sort isn’t the best use of their assets.
