What will Memphis Grizzlies do with soon-to-be free agent Dillon Brooks?

Desmond Bane

Under team control through 2023-24

Bane, 24, has gone from No. 30 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft to arguably the second-best player on the second-best NBA team in just two seasons. Everyone is keeping their eye on Desmond Bane to see if he continues his growth into his third season with the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies have opted-in to the club options for 2022-23 and 2023-24. Bane and the Grizzlies are able to start negotiating an extension after the 2022-23 season.

Dillon Brooks

Under contract through 2022-23

Dillon Brooks, 27, is the longest tenured player currently on the Memphis Grizzlies. He’s set to become an unrestricted free agent upon the conclusion of this season; however, a new extension can be negotiated and agreed to at any time during the regular season. However, with the way Brooks has played the last season or so, many are wondering how he might fit into the long-term plans of this team.

Kennedy Chandler

Under team control through 2025-26

Kennedy Chandler, 20, is a first-year NBA player on his rookie deal. Since he was a second-round pick, his contract is a little different than some of the other rookies on the team. He has a club option for 2025-26 and could become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2026.

Brandon Clarke

Under contract through 2026-27

Brandon Clarke, 26, reportedly agreed to a new contract extension that kicks in after his rookie deal expires at the end of this season. His contract includes a poison pill provision, according to Spotrac. This means if the Grizzlies trade Brandon Clarke before his new deal kicks in,  the Grizzlies will only be able to use his pre-extension salary in outgoing value ($4.34 million), but his new team accounts for his salary at the post-extension value ($12.5 million).

If the Grizzlies were to, for example, package Brandon Clarke and Dillon Brooks ($11.4 million) in a trade, they would have roughly $16.7 million in outgoing trade value. But their trade partner would have to account for it as roughly $23.9 million, making it much more difficult for matching purposes and in getting equal value.

Danny Green

Under team control through 2022-23

Danny Green, 35, had his contract restructured upon being traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. He had $6.96 million of his $10 million contract fully guaranteed during the trade. However, his remaining $3.3 million on his contract is not guaranteed until Jan. 10, according to multiple reports.
