With Jaren Jackson Jr. out to start the year, Santi Aldama found himself in the starting lineup for the Grizzlies’ season opener. After a strong performance in the preseason, the 21-year-old looks ready to take a big step forward in his development in year two.
Aldama played 38 minutes in the overtime win over the Knicks and posted 18 points to go along with 11 rebounds. He also managed to shoot a stellar 37.5% from beyond the arc, converting three of his eight attempts.
Following the win, Aldama opened up on his opening night experience:
“I was excited obviously for the start, it was a great feeling,” he said. “It was even better to get the win. That’s always how we finish games.”
Santi Aldama is latest Grizzlies player to be on fast track in development
Over the past few years, the Memphis Grizzlies have built a reputation of finding good young talent in the draft. Along with hitting on Ja Morant with a top pick, they have also found late-round gems like Desmond Bane and Brandon Clarke.
What has stood out for the Grizzlies is not only their ability to draft but to develop young talent as well. There have been countless examples of prospects coming in and having great success after working with the developmental staff. Bane was the standout of last year after bursting on the scene in year two, and Aldama could be the player to do the same in 2023.
While the sample size is still small, it’s clear the young big man has improved from his rookie season.
By far the biggest stride he has made is with his three-point shooting. After shooting 12.5% on low volume last year, Aldama has come back a completely different player. The volume in which he has shot from beyond the arc in preseason and Wednesday’s game is a testament to his growth in confidence.
Many wondered how the Grizzlies would fare to open the year without JJJ, but seeing how guys continue to step up when given the opportunity, they should be able to weather the storm.
