Memphis Grizzlies forward Santi Aldama keeps proving doubters wrong
In the home opener, Santi Aldama played more minutes than any other Grizzlies player, including their All-NBA point guard. The second-year forward ended with 18 points and 11 rebounds in his first start in place of Jaren Jackson Jr. Up to this point, he has lived up to the praise that Coach Jenkins and many others have spoken. The reason Aldama will have another big game in Houston is not because of any stats pulled from the year before, but because of the system, he is in.
The Grizzlies are the ultimate plug-and-play team. In the first few preseason games and one regular season matchup, Aldama has played carefree, pressureless basketball. This is due to the trust in the culture Coach Jenkins has put into place. A pace and space system is perfect for a 6’11 forward with the capability of knocking down shots from deep.
He will have a tough matchup against the number three overall pick Jabari Smith Jr. However, no one expected the numbers Aldama put up against the former Most Improved Player Julius Randle. So, who says he can’t give the rookie a “welcome to the league” moment?
