Through the first four games of the season, Grizzlies star Ja Morant is building off the breakout season he had in 2022. His play has been so strong that some around the league feel he should be the frontrunner for the MVP award.

Currently, Morant is posting averages of 32.6 PPG, 4.4 RPG, and 6.8 APG. If he can maintain near this level of production all year, he might be in the running for a different award.

Before the Nets and Bucks tipped off on ESPN Wednesday night, Stephen A. Smith was asked his thoughts on the play of the former No. 2 pick. It was there he stated that he wouldn’t be shocked if Morant walked away with the NBA’s scoring title.

"We’re talking about Ja Morant, he can do what he wants to offensively. He is a spectacular talent, he’s box office, he knows it, and responds to being the marquee. See that’s what you can always tell when you’re looking for those superstars that can lead the league in scoring. Guys that respond to being the marquee in a very positive fashion. He does that."

Why Ja Morant has a chance to win the NBA scoring title in 2023

While it’s still very early in the year, a case could be made for Stephen A.’s prediction of Ja Morant taking home the scoring title this season.

For starters, he doesn’t have another offensive star to split touches with. While the Grizzlies have All-Star level players in Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane, the offensive has one focal point. Given that everything is centered around the 23-year-old point guard, he could easily finish the year as one of the league’s top scorers.

Another reason why the Grizzlies star could increase his scoring is a growing development in his game. While Morant has always been known for his above-the-rim highlights, he has never been much of a threat from beyond the arc. However, he has managed to have a hot start from deep to open the season.

Currently, Morant is shooting 56.5% from beyond the arc on just under five attempts per game. It’s doubtful the percentage stays that high, but he’s been efficient thus far on career-best volume. If defenses have to start respecting his outside shot, it will make him one of the most un-guardable players in the entire league.
