In the early weeks of the 2023 season, Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies seem to be building off their strong campaign last year. They sit with a record of 7-4, good for sixth in the Western Conference.

Part of the reason why the Memphis Grizzlies continue to play well is the production they’re getting from their backcourt. Morant and Desmond Bane both took a step forward last season and are off to a scorching-hot start now.

The former No. 2 pick is leading the charge with averages of 28.5 PPG, 5.7 RPG, and 7.1 APG, but Bane is not far behind him. He is currently posting 24.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.6 assists a night.

Recently, Morant was asked about where he thinks the Memphis Grizzlies rank in terms of backcourt duos. He took this as an opportunity to say he and Bane sit atop the mountain as the league’s best guard duo.

Is Ja Morant right about the Memphis Grizzlies having the best backcourt in the NBA?

Morant and Bane certainly belong in the conversation for the league’s best backcourt, but it might not be their time yet. One thing is for sure, the Memphis Grizzlies have found their guard duo for the future.

Right now, both players are playing at an All-Star level. Because of their strong play to start the year, the Memphis Grizzlies are one of only three teams to have two top-20 scorers on their roster.

For the longest time, Steph Curry and Klay Thompson held the title of NBA’s best backcourt duo. However, at this point in their career, others have begun to jump them.

Judging off what we’ve seen so far this season, Morant and Bane’s biggest competition is the guard pairing of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell are two star-level talents and are also off to a strong start this season.

Still in their early to mid-20s, the Grizzlies’ guards are only going to get better. That being said, it might not be long before they are undoubtedly the best backcourt duo in the NBA.
