7 Potential Memphis Grizzlies offseason targets with ties to Ja Morant
By Tyler Watts
2. Nicolas Claxton
The Brooklyn Nets are at a crossroads. Their former superstar Big 3 all reside in different cities, but the front office did well in stockpiling assets in the trades. The Nets need a star, but they have plenty of pieces and picks to rebuild. Brooklyn does not control their own draft capital, so they are unlikely to tank, but the Nets could look to retool this offseason.
The Grizzlies are looking to upgrade their roster, and they may be willing to overpay for talent. Could Memphis convince the Nets to give up Nicolas Claxton? The 6’11 big man is set to make $8.7 million next after a breakout fourth year where he averaged 12.6 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 2.5 blocks in 29.9 minutes per game. Claxton is a unique big man that can guard multiple positions with plenty of room to grow.
The 24-year-old was on the same AAU team as Ja Morant (subscription required), and the two have played together since 2016. Could they find a way to reunite in Memphis?
The Brooklyn Nets are unlikely to give up Nicolas Claxton, but he could form an elite defensive duo next to Jaren Jackson Jr. on the Grizzlies. Do not be surprised if Memphis inquires about his availability, but they will likely be quickly rebuffed.
