Memphis Grizzlies that should be cut loose: 2. Ziaire Williams

Williams was the surprising tenth pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, and he backed it up with a strong rookie season. He quickly found his way into the rotation and even started 31 games. There was plenty of excitement about the 6’8 forward as he helped Memphis to the second-best record in the Western Conference and played in ten of their 12 playoff games.

His second season was a massive disappointment. Williams played in just 31 games as injuries and struggles kept him out of the rotation. He played in just 12 of the team’s final 30 regular season games, and the 6’8 forward got over ten minutes just three times during that stretch. He was a virtual non-factor.

The 21-year-old was limited to mop-up duties in the playoffs, despite the team’s injuries. He could not get consistent minutes, and the problem is here to stay.

Dillon Brooks is the team’s only free agent, and the Grizzlies are looking for an upgrade. Some rebuilding team would likely pay to acquire Ziaire Williams based on his rookie performance. It would impact their depth, but Memphis had Steven Adams, Brandon Clarke, and Luke Kennard out in the postseason and Williams still only got off the bench in garbage time. It is likely best for both sides to find a fresh start.
