David Roddy dishes on necessary changes after Grizzlies lose to Cavaliers
By Mark Nilon
David Roddy may only be entering his second season in the association, but on this Memphis Grizzlies Summer League team he’s a seasoned veteran.
Because of this, the power forward feels as though he sees what he and his teammates need to hone in on and what they should try to improve upon for July 12’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers following their blowout loss at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
“That grit, that defensive grit I’d say,” David Roddy said to Grizzlies reporter Kelcey Wright following their loss to Cleveland. “Starting off early, you know, just with our rhythm as well as our intensity. It’s on me to kind of lead these guys on the defensive end and bring that energy from the jump.”
Roddy would wrap up his comments on necessary changes for this Grizzlies team by ultimately highlighting two other important aspects: “Share the ball and have fun.”
Pinpointing defensive intensity as a necessary improvement is certainly a warranted response from the 22-year-old, as the Grizzlies let up 100 points while allowing the Cavaliers to shoot a highly efficient 52.1 percent from the floor and an even grander 55.6 percent from deep.
On top of this, they committed a whopping 15 fouls and sent Cleveland to the line to shoot a total of 18 free-throw attempts. Luckily for Memphis, they proved to be highly inconsistent with their shot from the charity stripe, converting on just nine of them.
Not all was poor for Grind City, however, as the club still managed to see some (albeit scarce) bright spots.
David Roddy himself led his team in points with 18 to go along with 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal.
Jake LaRavia was right alongside him in the positive producers department on the evening, as the wing continued to shoot lights out from distance for the Grizzlies, splashing home five of his twelve total long-range attempts. He would finish with 16 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal in 27 minutes of action.
Unfortunately, outside of these two, there proved to be little dependability on the offensive side of the ball, as the 11 other players that saw playing time accounted for just 43 total points while the team as a whole shot a putrid 34.2 percent from the floor and 27.9 percent from distance.
With a day of preparation between now and their third game of the Las Vegas Summer League against the Clippers, the hope is the Grizzlies can make the proper adjustments and claim win number two.
