2. Provides needed wing depth

Though the departure of Dillon Brooks this summer seems to have been an overall positive for the franchise, especially when it comes to financial specifics, one of the few negative effects on the team is a rather large one, for they now have a serious need for wing talents.

Rudy Gay may be well past his prime, but he’s still a proven commodity at the position who, even last season, showed that he has some gas left in the tank to provide spot minutes when needed.

As of this writing, the Grizzlies will certainly need them.

Despite boasting underwhelming 2022-23 averages of just 5.2 points and 2.9 rebounds, right from the jump of the campaign, the 36-year-old showed flashes of his old high-powered self, dropping 16 points on 75.0 percent shooting from the field and 66.7 percent shooting from distance during the Utah Jazz’s opening night win.

Granted, it must be noted that the Grizzlies should by no means view Gay as a reliable replacement option for Brooks at the starting three spot in the event that they do scoop him up off free agency.

That said, they could certainly use all the help they can get until they find a long-term fix to this rotational void, and he could be a cheap and, obviously, familiar depth option in the meantime.
