Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant snubbed from recent rankings
By Mark Nilon
Despite being just 24 years old and heading into his fifth season in the association, Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant has already thrust himself into the conversation for being known as one of the game’s brightest stars.
Throughout his tenure in the league, the former Murray State standout has gone on to accumulate a slew of top-notch accolades such as Rookie of the Year and Most Improved Player to go along with two All-Star selections, and, in 2021-22, an All-NBA nod.
Now, heading into 2023-24, even with his impending 25-game suspension to start the campaign some such as former MVP candidate Isaiah Thomas believe the youngster could be heading toward his greatest season yet which, considering these aforementioned accomplishments coupled with lofty averages of 22.4 points, 7.4 assists, and 4.8 rebounds is an astonishing idea.
However, even with this type of pedigree, Adam Fromal of Bleacher Report doesn’t seem to believe that his top-flight play will be as prevalent over these next five seasons, as the writer recently omitted Morant’s name on his rankings list of the top 10 stars across the NBA between now and the 2027-28 season.
Grizzlies guard Ja Morant snubbed from top-10 stars list over the next five years
Found ranked ahead of the Grizzlies star on this list are a bevy of players who, though superbly talented, have accomplished far less during their NBA careers thus far in comparison, with two in Scoot Henderson (ranked eight) and Victor Wembanyama (five) who haven’t even seen on-court action yet.
That said, Fromal did mention the snub of Morant within his piece, listing him as an “honorable mention” along with several other current star guards such as De’Aaron Fox and Donovan Mitchell.
"“De’Aaron Fox, Donovan Mitchell, and Ja Morant could all sneak into the top 10 for a wide variety of reasons, though the field of high-level guards is impossibly deep,” Fromal wrote."
Already, Morant has guided the Grizzlies to two second-seeded finishes in the Western Conference standings, three postseason berths, and an appearance in the conference semifinals, which is more than the likes of ranked players such as Cade Cunningham (10), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (seven), and Anthony Edwards (six) have accomplished for their respective clubs.
Perhaps they’ll find themselves having the type of impact on their teams that Morant has already showcased in Memphis within the next five seasons, but this is mere speculation.
The Grizzlies star has already proven his worth, and fans expect him to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
