SF: Trey Murphy III

Murphy III was the 17th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft and had a breakout second season with the Pelicans. He averaged 14.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.1 steals in 31.0 minutes per game. The 6’9 wing shot 40.6 percent from 3-point range and looks to be a key rotation piece for the next 15 years.

The 23-year-old suffered a meniscus injury that will force him to miss part of the 2023-24 season. His comeback is something to monitor, but the injury should not have major long-term impacts on Murphy’s career.

The 6’9 wing will be 27 years old at the start of the 2028-29 season and right in the middle of his prime. His defense must improve, but his 7’1 wingspan and athletic ability are positive signs for the talented wing. If Murphy III becomes a defensive force that can shoot over 40 percent from 3-point range and score 15 points per game, he will be the apple of every team’s eye.

Trey Murphy III becomes a restricted free agent in 2025 and should be three years into an extension in 2028. If he only has one year remaining on his contract and no interest in re-signing, it will be time for the Pelicans to move on. The Memphis Grizzlies will be waiting as Murphy III rounds out their roster and puts them in title contention.
