After two failed postseason runs in back-to-back years despite holding the second seed in each, the Memphis Grizzlies are looking to 2023-24 as a time to finally thrust themselves over the hump and take part in meaningful, deep playoff action.

That said, despite these high aspirations, Taylor Jenkins’ club is by no means guaranteed to see such a lofty turnout.

From the impending 25-game absence of star Ja Morant to kick off the year to their few yet ever-so-present sore spots within the rotation, there are plenty of factors that could go against Memphis’ pursuit of glory.

Ironically, when looking at past Grizzlies teams, though they may have fallen short themselves, there were several now-departed individuals who, if present on this current roster, could help eliminate some of the lineup’s more glaring concerns and, in turn, better their odds of contending.

Former Grizzlies players who would be of big help to the team this season

Though none are or ever were star talents, there are three former members of the organization who, if still employed in the 38103, would prove to be of great help.

3. JaMychal Green

Of the players who will be found listed, JaMychal Green is the only one who still currently finds himself available for the taking.

A former member of the Grizzlies who played for the blue, navy, and yellow from 2015 through 2019, the veteran is a tweener big man who provides defensive intangibles, rebounding, and floor-spacing abilities.

Considering the Achilles rehabilitation time frame for Brandon Clarke, how poorly the team played last season with Steven Adams sidelined due to his PCL sprain, and the sheer fact that they are severely lacking in experience down in the frontcourt GM Zach Kleiman and company may want to be open to the idea of adding another proven commodity to their big man rotation.

On a low-cost contract, Green could be an optimal talent worthy of consideration.

Coming into his tenth season in the league, the 33-year-old recently found himself posting per-game averages of 6.4 points and 3.6 rebounds through 57 games with the Golden State Warriors last year while shooting a highly efficient 54.0 percent from the floor and 37.8 percent from deep on 6.6 attempts per 100 possessions.

With his quick thinking and savvy shooting stroke on offense, coupled with his strong defensive prowess, Green is a player who is capable of switching between the four and the five spots when called upon, which could prove to be a true luxury within Jenkins’ rotation this coming campaign.
