After several months of dormancy, the Memphis Grizzlies made their return to the hardwood on Sunday for their first taste of in-game action of 2023-24. Though it was merely their preseason opener, Taylor Jenkins’ squad took part in a bout that seemed to spark regular-season excitement.
A back-and-forth affair, the Grizzlies and Indiana Pacers saw the exhibition extending into extra innings after a last-second Jalen Smith lay-in.
Fortunately, the fans in attendance at FedEx Forum wound up being treated to a hard-fought overtime triumph by the home team, as Memphis would outscore Indiana 13-8 in crunch time while shooting a highly efficient 62.5 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from distance.
Of course, not all was perfect for the Grizzlies on the night, as they were wildly inconsistent in many aspects of the game (shot just 21.1 percent from deep and committed 26 personal fouls) and were without several key contributors such as Ja Morant (suspension) and Marcus Smart (injury).
Nevertheless, in many ways, the good from the game seems to have outweighed the bad.
