Cam Spencer's 3-point contest snub makes absolutely no sense

The bad news continues to come for Grizzlies fans. It is not injury related, but a bad snub just happened for All-Star weekend.

In his second NBA season, Cam Spencer has started to establish himself as a reliable player for the Grizzlies. In 49 games, Spencer is averaging 12 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists in 24.2 minutes per game. He has made a scoring leap and has also had significant growth as a playmaker; however, most impressively, he is shooting 46% from three.

Since his days at Rutgers and UConn, Cam Spencer has made his presence felt with his competitive nature and strong ability as a perimeter shooter. That has all translated to the league, but now it is not a stretch to say he is one of the best shooters in the NBA. Despite his impressive season, Spencer was left out of the 3-point contest, to the surprise of many fans.

Spencer was a very obvious 3-point contest snub

Cam Spencer has the fourth-best 3-point percentage in the NBA right now. Spencer is also shooting 4.9 threes per game, a respectable volume in his role. However, to make matters worse, there is only one participant who currently has a top ten three-point percentage, Bobby Portis (6th best).

Damian Lillard, who has yet to play in a game this season due to an Achilles tear, will be one of the participants. While Devin Booker is still one of the better scorers in the NBA, he is shooting a career-low 30.7% from behind the arc. Other players such as Jamal Murray and Kon Knueppel absolutely deserve to be in, but the clear point is that Spencer should've made the 3-point contest over multiple players.

At least there's the Rising Stars Challenge

Cam Spencer's sophomore leap has not gone fully unrecognized despite being snubbed from the 3-point contest. Alongside teammates Jaylen Wells and Cedric Coward, Spencer was selected for the Rising Stars Challenge. Cam Spencer will be playing on Team T-Mac alongside rookie standout Kon Knueppel. Other teammates include sophomores Alex Sarr and Ajay Mitchell and promising rookie scorer Tre Johnson.

Despite the Grizzlies continuing to fall in the standings, Cam Spencer has been a major bright spot for the team. An injury-riddled rookie season prevented him from having a truly big role last year, but he has capitalized on his chances this season. As the Grizzlies pivot into a rebuild, Spencer will be an integral piece in helping the team return to winning ways soon.

Even without participating in this year's 3-point contest, the Grizzlies have one of the best three-point shooters in the NBA in Cam Spencer. Despite being snubbed this year, there is a high probability that he will compete in the 3-point contest later in his career.
