The Jaren Jackson Jr. trade is still a shock to many in Memphis. However, beyond just Jackson Jr., the Grizzlies got rid of three other rotation players in John Konchar, Vince Williams Jr., and Jock Landale. Given the current state of the Grizzlies' frontcourt, it was slightly surprising to see Landale included in the deal.
Vince Williams Jr. and John Konchar have yet to make their debuts in a Jazz uniform. Jock Landale, on the other hand, was traded to the Hawks on Wednesday for cash considerations. Tonight, Jock Landale already made the Utah Jazz instantly regret their decision to trade him.
His Hawks debut could not have gone any better
Jock Landale was inserted in the starting lineup despite just making it to Atlanta in time for the game. What followed after was simply an electric debut for Landale. In 31 minutes of game action, Landale was able to score 26 points and also recorded 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Most impressive was his efficiency, as he shot 10 for 14 from the field. He also made 5 of his three-point shots.
Just like his time in Memphis, he gave the Hawks an immediate offensive boost. Given that the Hawks were also busy during this trade deadline, it would've been understandable if the Hawks did not have a rhythm. Ultimately, Landale's experience in the league instantly paid off, and he immediately played a big role in the Hawks' 121-119 victory.
Landale had a point to prove on defense
Something that Landale really struggled with in Memphis was his rim protection. He also was not as prolific of a shot blocker as his teammates, such as Zach Edey and Jaren Jackson Jr. However, Landale was able to record four blocked shots on the night.
While Landale is not exactly known for quality defense, he played with a different level of defensive intensity compared to most of his time in Memphis. It remains to be seen how his defense progresses, but Landale could possibly be already benefiting from fresh scenery in Atlanta.
What this means for the Grizzlies
As the Grizzlies' backcourt finally starts to get healthier, the frontcourt is now diminished due to the recent trades. Zach Edey and Brandon Clarke are still sidelined with injuries, but the Grizzlies simply don't have much to work with in the frontcourt in the coming weeks.
Given that Landale is on a veteran minimum contract and still a reliable offensive player, it was surprising to see him included in the trade package of the Jaren Jackson Jr. trade. While Landale was likely not going to factor into the Grizzlies' long-term plans in the first place, the Grizzlies likely could've still used his offensive production the rest of the season.
