Grizzlies can't afford costly draft error that could derail their rebuild

Do not field any offers for the #3 pick at all.

Even though there should be plenty of hope after the Grizzlies landed the #3 overall pick, we are not far removed from the team going 25-57. Not long ago, the Grizzlies were one of the most promising teams in the NBA but now find themselves in a brand new rebuild. If the Grizzlies want to avoid derailing their rebuild early on, they must not trade the #3 overall pick.

Given how promising the top four prospects are in this draft class, it is not difficult to see why teams would want to make audacious efforts to trade up. Given that the Thunder and Spurs are in the middle of an intense Western Conference Finals matchup, there have been some recent rumblings about the Thunder potentially attempting to trade up for one of Cam Boozer or Caleb Wilson.

While that possibility should be taken with a grain of salt, one thing couldn't be more clear for the Grizzlies: they must hold on to the #3 pick no matter the offers they receive.

The Grizzlies need a true franchise-altering talent as soon as possible

With the Grizzlies not winning a playoff series since 2022 and having multiple injury-ravaged seasons, the #3 pick is a perfectly timed reward for their recent struggles. It would be pretty deflating if the Grizzlies traded the pick that they positioned themselves to get since the start of the new year. With how strong the top 3 is in this draft, it doesn't make sense for the Grizzlies to lose out on a potentially franchise-altering talent.

The Grizzlies already seem to be keyed in on building around Cedric Coward, Zach Edey, and the #3 pick, likely to be Cam Boozer. Players such as GG Jackson II and Jaylen Wells should have important roles, but the Grizzlies likely have multiple sleepers in Taylor Hendricks and Cam Spencer. Despite having some promising young talent, the Grizzlies need a true franchise player that can significantly elevate everyone around them.

Even if the Grizzlies hypothetically moved back in this year's draft and got future picks, they are still decreasing their chances at having a franchise cornerstone. Despite their being plenty of good players available in a stacked 2026 NBA Draft, potential options for the Grizzlies such as Darryn Peterson and Cam Boozer have a faster path to giving the team an immediate impact.

This summer is full of many important decisions, such as deciding Ja Morant's future and how to use three top-32 picks in this draft. However, the Grizzlies' first basic offseason priority should be to not trade the #3 pick and to take whoever falls between Cam Boozer and Darryn Peterson. The Grizzlies struck gold in this year's lottery, and now it is time to capitalize.
