It is safe to say that this preseason did not have many positives for the Memphis Grizzlies. The list of injuries continues to grow for the Grizzlies, and the team had some significant struggles defensively throughout most of the preseason. However, Olivier-Maxence Prosper, who is currently on a two-way contract, continues to build a strong case for himself.
Over the summer, the Grizzlies took an upside swing when they signed Olivier-Maxence Prosper to a two-way contract. He was previously a 2023 first-round pick but struggled to earn significant playing time with the Dallas Mavericks. Ultimately, he was waived by Dallas despite drawing trade interest from multiple teams. Since then, Prosper has capitalized on his preseason opportunities with the Grizzlies.
Still just 23 years old, Olivier-Maxence Prosper is listed at 6'8" and has a 7'1" wingspan. Prosper tested very well at the 2023 NBA Draft Combine, finishing top five in combine drills such as the standing vertical leap and shuttle run. While his game is still raw, his athletic upside could allow him to develop into a solid two-way player in the league.
Olivier-Maxence Prosper gave the Grizzlies a spark in preseason
Olivier-Maxence Prosper appeared in four of the five preseason games for the Grizzlies. Prosper struggled significantly shooting behind the arc; however, he still provided value in other areas, especially on defense. Despite the Grizzlies' team defense struggling as a whole, Prosper defended at a high level throughout the preseason.
With a Grizzlies team that is looking to improve their perimeter defense from last season, Prosper looked comfortable defending in isolation and had quick closeouts on perimeter shots. Prosper also showed a strong ability to create deflections, including the Detroit game where he had two blocks and two steals in just 18 minutes. Prosper should be a significant defensive boost for the Grizzlies when he's on the court.
It was Olivier-Maxence Prosper's performance against the Miami Heat in the Grizzlies' preseason finale that really stood out. In 24 minutes, Prosper had 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Prosper was disruptive defensively and added two steals and a block. Beyond stats, Prosper's energy in the fourth quarter was essential to the Grizzlies earning their only preseason win.
Even with Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. being expected to play the season opener, the Grizzlies will be without key players such as Zach Edey, Ty Jerome, Scotty Pippen Jr., and Brandon Clarke. With the Grizzlies facing a significant injury crisis to start the season, multiple young players on the roster will need to step up early. Olivier-Maxence Prosper will have opportunities to build on his momentum from preseason and possibly earn his way to a standard contract with the Grizzlies in the future.
