Despite the Grizzlies losing their fifth straight game, Cedric Coward once again proved the Grizzlies right. In the 2025 NBA Draft, the Grizzlies were previously supposed to pick 16th overall. Instead, the Grizzlies used pick #16, a 2028 first-round pick, and two second-round picks to move up to #11 and take Coward. As each day passes, the Grizzlies clearly made the right decision.
Cedric Coward only played six games in his final collegiate season before undergoing shoulder surgery. Despite not playing in Summer League and having some shooting struggles in the preseason, it has not affected his readiness as a pro. As a matter of fact, it is looking like Cedric Coward should end up being one of the best rookies of a strong 2025 NBA Draft.
This season, Cedric Coward is currently averaging 13.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game.
Coward has the potential to be great in Memphis
Like most rookies, Cedric Coward has had months where he has shot better than others. However, it's clear he is capable of being a very efficient shooter in this league. Coward is shooting 46% from the field and also shooting 34% from three.
Even though his three-point hasn't always been falling consistently, his 84.3% free throw percentage suggests the shooting touch is there. His shooting form also clearly passes the eye test, and it is likely he will improve significantly as a shooter in his second season.
Beyond just scoring, Coward has so many skills that should make him successful for years to come. Coward is a smart offensive player off the ball and is a very skilled rebounder for a wing player. He will need to get stronger this offseason; however, it is clear with his wingspan and athleticism that he has serious potential to become a high-impact defender.
Coward vs. Edgecombe matchups have been electric
In both 76ers vs. Grizzlies matchups, Cedric Coward and VJ Edgecombe have both risen to the occasion and shown the promising potential they both have. Back in December, Coward had 28 points, 16 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Edgecombe also had 25 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists, while also hitting the game-winning three in overtime.
Edgecombe's clutch shot making and Coward's overall dominant play made it one of the best rookie head-to-head matchups of the entire season. Last night was a bit different since Coward was on a minute restriction, but both rookies reminded everyone why they're amongst the best rookies of the 2025 NBA Draft.
Coward had 13 points, 16 rebounds, and 4 assists in 25 minutes, while Edgecombe had 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists in 35 minutes. Edgecombe was pivotal towards the 76ers winning late, but Coward was very impactful despite his minutes restriction. It is safe to say both head-to-head matchups between them lived up to expectations.
Cedric Coward has had a phenomenal rookie season, and all signs point to him becoming a special player in Memphis. He will have to keep growing as an on-ball creator and will need to get stronger this offseason. However, it is clearly obvious that the Grizzlies made the right choice to move up and that he will be a key piece long-term regardless of what happens to Ja Morant.
