The Memphis Grizzlies' successful season can be attributed to a lot of things but the primary reason might be the emergence of Jaren Jackson Jr. While the 6'11 former Michigan State Spartan experienced his fair share of success during his first six seasons, his performance this year is placing him among the best two-way players in the entire league.
He is averaging a career-high in points (22.9) and steals (1.4) while fouling at the lowest rate than he has at any point in his career, including his Defensive Player of the Year and All-Star appearance season in 2023. While his success this season is contributing to one of the NBA's best teams, he was acknowledged once again for his efforts by the NBA.
Jaren Jackson Jr. is named as Western Conference Player of the Week
Jaren Jackson Jr. was named the Western Conference Player of the Week for the Grizzlies' 4-0 homestand last week. He averaged 25.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.5 blocks on 57.6% shooting during the Grizzlies homestand the previous week.
He continues to lead the team in points, steals, and blocks (1.6 per game), and has improved as a playmaker, matching a career-high with seven assists in their victory against the New Orleans Pelicans on January 24th.
This is the first time that Jackson Jr. was named the Player of the Week, and it comes after he officially received his award for Defensive Player of the Month for December before the Grizzlies' home game against the Charlotte Hornets on January 22nd.
Jaren also led the Western Conference in plus-minus per game last week with a +17.5 average and ranked third in the NBA in net rating (+24.6) behind Jaylen Wells and Ja Morant. As the NBA prepares to announce the All-Star reserves on January 30th, Jaren Jackson Jr. is a name that is expected to be heard.
If it happens, it would mark Jaren's second All-Star appearance, and he deserves it for his accomplishments this season. Winning this award for conference Player of the Week on the week of the All-Star reserve announcements is a good look and might be a sign of what's to come in the coming days for the former number four overall draft pick from the 2018 NBA draft.
His teammates are petitioning for it as Ja Morant recently answered "I think it's no question" to a question about whether Jaren should be an All-Star in a postgame interview on January 20th.
This week is trending towards being a huge week for the former Defensive Player of the Year and he is poised to continue his greatness as the Grizzlies prepare to battle for the Western Conference two-seed this week.
