19. New York Knicks (via Mavericks) choose Zach Edey
Edey is one of the most interesting players in the country. He was the National Player of the Year in 2023 but received no buzz as a first-round draft pick. The 7’4 big man returned for his senior season at Purdue where he is again a dominant force. His numbers are down slightly, but his overall impact and versatility are up with his draft stock.
The production is undeniable. Edey averaged 21.8 points, 10.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 2.3 blocks in 29.1 minutes per game through his first 16 contests as a senior. He is shooting 63.2 percent from the field and 74.7 percent on his free throws.
There are questions about his game. Edey cannot defend on the perimeter and will be hunted in pick and rolls. He has missed his only NCAA 3-point attempt and turns 22 before draft night. What is his role in the NBA? Can he play 30 minutes per game or do his limitations force him off the floor?
At some point, getting arguably the most productive player in the NCAA makes sense. The New York Knicks have Mitchell Robinson, but Isaiah Hartenstein is a free agent in the offseason. They could draft Edey with one of their two first-round picks as insurance in case he decides to leave the Big Apple.
