It was a lost season for the Grizzlies as the likes of Ja Morant and Desmond Bane couldn’t stay on the floor to build on the team’s No. 2 seed in the Western Conference.
Memphis was a non-contender for nearly this entire season, but now may benefit from the long-term as the team can add a likely top 10 pick into its bounty of young assets to continue growing as a Western Conference contender.
The Grizzlies have the seventh worst record in the NBA and have a decent chance of winning the lottery all together, a 7.5% chance per NBA.com. Currently at FanDuel Sportsbook, the Grizz have +1000 to land the right ping-pong ball combination, which translates to 9.1%.
While it may not be the most efficient betting opportunity to take Memphis to win the lottery, its notable that the team is listed as the seventh most likely team to win the lottery, a punchers chance relative to its peers.
Memphis is well positioned to build on its strong core that is as loaded as any group. Remember, this is a team that was the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference just a year ago, but had to deal with Ja Morant’s suspension and subsequent injury before a host of other ailments throughout the rest of the year for other key players on the roster, including Desmond Bane.
This is merely a setback for the Grizzlies, who are expected to be right back in the hunt next season for the top of the West, with a lottery pick in hand.
