The Memphis Grizzlies plan on jumping back into contention, but are a different team than the 2023 version that won 51 games. Dillon Brooks, Steven Adams, Tyus Jones, and Xavier Tillman Sr. are gone. Memphis traded multiple first-round picks to get Marcus Smart and is relying more heavily on their young talent. The Grizzlies still believe they are one of the best in the West, but there are plenty of skeptics.
The franchise is in a difficult spot if they struggle. They are just $810,981 below the luxury tax line and have shown no interest in paying the premium. Upgrading at the deadline won’t be easy, and Memphis may need to make a cost-cutting move to avoid the tax.
If the Grizzlies make a trade to improve their roster, someone with a significant salary likely goes out. Marcus Smart is the most likely option because his lack of shooting may be problematic with Ja Morant back. If their fit isn’t working, Memphis could try to acquire these players before the deadline and stay under the luxury tax.
4. Kyle Kuzma
This is complicated because Kuzma makes $3.3 million more than Smart this season. Memphis could add in Derrick Rose or Jake LaRavia to make the math work. It would cost the Grizzlies draft picks too as the Wizards are rebuilding and have no need for Smart.
This is a defense-for-offense trade. Kuzma has averaged over 21 points per game for two straight years and showcased improved playmaking last season. The 6’9 forward is not an elite shooter, but he can certainly get buckets and has championship experience.
Kyle Kuzma was on the trade block last year and will be again closer to the deadline in 2025. This could be a way for the Grizzlies to shake things up and adjust their mix. They could use some wing size, but Kuzma’s defense and floor spacing may not be strong enough to solve their woes.
