3. Memphis lands All-Star big man
The Cavaliers are figuring things out after their first-round playoff exit in 2023. They have struggled to stay healthy this season, and there are significant fit questions. Can Cleveland win with two small guards in the backcourt? Do Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley work together in the frontcourt? The Cavs are not trading Mobley, but Mitchell and Allen could be on the block if they decide to shake things up.
The Grizzlies would love to add the All-Star big man to pair with Jaren Jackson Jr. Allen is a strong rebounder and finisher with room to grow. He could make up for JJJ’s deficiencies and give Memphis that needed presence inside. Allen won’t come cheap up, but this offer may be enough to get it done.
Ziaire Williams was a top-ten pick in 2021, but he has failed to blossom in Memphis. The 6’9 wing has a ton of potential but needs to improve his jumper and defense to get more run. The Cavaliers could try to develop him. Steven Adams and John Konchar make the salary work, but this leaves the Grizzlies with a shooting need.
Jackson Jr. is a better weak-side rim protector and can switch onto the perimeter. It will allow Jarrett Allen to patrol the paint and be a force inside. Allen will be the primary pick-and-roll partner for Ja Morant and could open things back up for the Memphis Grizzlies' attack.
