After a rough outing against the Wizards, Jarell Martin bounces back and leads the Memphis Grizzlies past the Sacramento Kings.

Jarell Martin, the Memphis Grizzlies’ 2015 first-round draft pick, didn’t have a good game in the first Summer League matchup. Although he scored 13 points, it took him 12 shots to get there. In addition, he couldn’t stop fouling as he picked up eight fouls (side-note: Summer League allows put to 10 fouls). Things weren’t looking pretty for the big man.

As he’s entering his third year in the league, this Summer League is crucial. Martin should be demolishing just about everybody in these games. Most players are either rookies, sophomores or guys trying to find a spot on a training camp roster. In this first game, he didn’t play like a two-year player. However, in last night’s matchup against the Kings, Martin bounced back and outplayed Skal Labissiere – a young prospect with a lot of potential.

Martin scored 21 points and hauled in 10 rebounds – seven being on the offensive end. He was active on the glass and scored in many different ways – in the post, at the line and around the perimeter.

If he wants time on the everyday roster, he has to perform like this more often.

Other Takeaways

  • Wayne Selden is a dog. He had 21 points and continued to be “a man among boys.” Dave Fizdale has to find a way to get him minutes on the “varsity” roster.
  • Deyonta Davis is active on defense. His offensive game isn’t there by any means, as he’s only scored six points total in the Summer League. However, his defensive potential is promising. He can alter shots without necessarily blocking them, and he can also generate steals. His offense isn’t there yet, but his defense may be enough to get him minutes next year.
  • Wade Baldwin didn’t let De’Aaron Fox torch him. A lot of people were probably concerned about this matchup. Fox is one of the best point guard prospects in this class, and depending on your stance, he might be the best of all. However, Baldwin outplayed Fox. The 2016 first-round pick scored 12 points, hauled in 10 rebounds and dished out four assists. More importantly, he only turned the ball over once. If he wants to see minutes next year, he has to take care of the basketball. Plain and simple.
