Following today’s NBA trade news, could this mean the Memphis Grizzlies could land another key piece on a cheap deal with Matt Barnes?

Just moments ago, the Los Angeles Clippers–one of the Memphis Grizzlies’ biggest rivals–sent wing Matt Barnes and big man Spencer Hawes to the Charlotte Hornets in return for guard Lance Stephenson. Yes, this was a rather big trade, especially to be in the middle of the month of June.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports gave some insight into the likely situation for Matt Barnes:

Assuming that Matt Barnes does become a free-agent by July 1st, would Memphis be a possible destination? They could definitely use his services being as he can shoot from outside (36.2% in 2014-15) as well as penetrate into the paint and attack the basket. Where Barnes’ value really lies–especially in regard to the Memphis Grizzlies–is his defense. Not only could he add some scoring (10.1 points per game this season), but he could provide top-notch defensive ability, too. That could be huge for the Grizz.

Memphis should be a championship-contending team in 2015-16 as Marc Gasol is expected to sign a long-term deal with the Grizzlies. If he leaves, it may completely wash any possible contract negotiations with Matt Barnes.

Would the Grizz consider him? I believe so because he could be a major addition that could help them to finally reach the NBA Finals–and perhaps more.

Is there bad blood between the Memphis Grizzlies and Barnes that may sway him away from the 901?

There definitely has been a major rivalry between the Clippers and the Grizz while Barnes has been in Los Angeles. He is an instigator on the court. He loves to get under opponents’ skins. However, that is who he is as a basketball player. I think that he would be more willing to get some revenge on his former Clippers’ teammates because I imagine he is sour right now with the sudden trade.

If Barnes becomes a free-agent, Memphis must be first in line to persuade him where to sign next. It is a big opportunity that the Grizz must embark upon.

Grizz Nation, what are your thoughts?! Should the Grizzlies pursue Matt Barnes if he becomes a free-agent?
