A Summer League standout beat the odds — and his Memphis Grizzlies teammates — on Friday during an offseason workout.

It is just over one week until the start of the Memphis Grizzlies‘ training camp. Players are rounding into town. Excitement is stirring for the new season. Basketball is almost back.

In speaking of Grizzlies players returing to Grind City, a few members of the team’s backcourt took part in a group workout on Friday. It apparently turned into a competitive battle of one-on-one. The contestants appear to have been Mike Conley, Wayne Selden, and Memphis’ latest training camp invitee — Brandon Goodwin.

Goodwin made a name for himself as a member of the Memphis Grizzlies’ rosters in the Utah and Las Vegas Summer Leagues. He is an intriguing prospect that really fits the mold of the prototypical Grizzly. It is no surprise he received an invitation to training camp as he truly earned the honor. Brandon could very well land on the Grizzlies’ lone open two-way contract spot.

While there is no footage available — at least as of Saturday evening — of the one-on-one battle of the Grizz guards, Brandon Goodwin is said to have been the victor. Though it does not mean much overall, it is still impressive.

Conley is an All-Star-caliber point guard and Selden is a veteran offensive catalyst. Goodwin is a guy that is not on a guaranteed contract. For now, he is a mere training camp audition. He has zero NBA experience.

Based off Brandon Goodwin’s tweet, there was a social media wager placed on the drill. Mike Conley kept his promise and gave a shout out to Goodwin on his Instagram story, which was also shared by Selden on his personal account.

All in all, this is a dream come true for Brandon. Conley is a player he has idolized and now he will be competing against him in NBA training camp. Perhaps the best is yet to come for the 22-year-old product out of Florida Gulf Coast University.

It may not have been ideal from the fan base’s perspective when the Memphis Grizzlies decided to sever ties with guard Kobi Simmons a few weeks ago, but the Front Office continues to bring in guards of high quality. When it comes to the backcourt, the Grizzlies have no shortage of talent or bodies.
