Grit ‘N’ Grind is Alive and Well

The roster moves Memphis made this offseason suggested a return to their “GNG” roots, and Monday’s defense-heavy win was a great early co-sign.

The Grizzlies beat the Utah Jazz — perennially one of league’s best defensive teams — at their own game, smothering the perimeter and forcing tough looks.

Utah shot a repugnant 25% from long range, and managed just 35% from the field for the game. They also coughed the ball over 15 times, as Memphis suffocated passing lanes and forced panicked movement.

It was Utah’s weakest offensive output since a February 23rd loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. While Donovan Mitchell, Ricky Rubio, and Joe Ingles certainly had off games, Memphis’ blitzkrieg team defense kept them from getting into any sort of rhythm.
